Nicole Ari Parker is an American stage and television actor known for her performance as the fierce lawyer Teri Joseph on the Showtime show Soul Food. Nikki Kodjoe is her new name after she married. Her acting career began after she joined the Washington Ballet Company and the theater. The family was born from Mumbai, India and raised in Nigeria up to 7 years old, Contractor was well-versed in world travels and a variety of different cultures from a young age. She was a boarding student in London between the ages of seven and nine years of age, and then her family moved into Toronto, Canada, where she lived the bulk of her childhood and young adulthood. Contractor studied classical ballet in Toronto. She also excelled academically. She was a student at the Etobicoke School of the Arts in Toronto, a fine arts institution focused on theatre and dance. At 16 and after more than 10 years of dance Contractor discovered she was looking to study acting professionally. After she had completed her high school education, she was awarded a full Scholarship to University of Toronto. At the University of Toronto she completed an MA in Theatre, and she also double-majored in Psychology and Sociology. Contractor was cast in her first show in the midst of her university year. After two weeks of performances, she got positive reviews. This play was named one of the most successful productions by Canadian critics. The actress accepted an invitation to join Stratford's conservatory, a program where only four men and eight women are able to take a 20 weeks crash course of classical theater. Her place was guaranteed during the upcoming play, and she landed Hermia's character in A Midsummer Night's Dream.
